My Projects

Unisex Angel

This picture started as a female form facing the onlooker. As it developed, I decided that adding facial features distracted from the timeless, sexless form I sought to depict. I therefore turned ‘her’ around so that the form now appears to grow out of the ground and reach out into a world beyond the beholder’s sight. The wings are powerful, composed from layers of plaster and paint, adding strength to the angel’s extended arms. The beige tones, enhanced with gold, harmonise with the different clay shades of a Majorcan wall, where the angel now hangs in all it’s splendour. It almost appears to grow into the wall, and earthly merges with celestial.

Il Postino

This piece was commissioned by a friend as a present to her husband in memory of their holiday in Sicily. The painting shows the original billboard for the film, Il Postino, which still stands today in the coastal town of Salina, where parts of the film were shot. According to popular hearsay, the bike parts poking through the now well-weathered billboard, are parts from the postman’s original bicycle. Whilst I could not literally plaster bike parts on to the canvas, by applying very thick paint and careful shading, I could closely simulate the 3-dimensional bike parts, which almost appear to cut through the canvas. The weather-worn colours on the original billboard were exchanged with more brilliant colours to recapture some of the original energy, passion and pathos of the film.

Cala Torta, Mallorca

This painting was inspired by Cala Torta, a beach which lies in North-East of Mallorca. As I walked across a deserted beach in the early morning, I was entranced by its rugged romance and determined to transcribe my impressions onto canvas using a mix of acrylics and grainy paints to recreate the calm, yet wild environment.

Wild grass

A still life of wild grasses picked during my favourite local walking route, Sa Cimentera, where a broad range of flowers and herbs grow in abundance alongside the olive, almond and orange plantations. I chose to use soft coloured pencils, sometimes applying a bit of water, to capture the delicate, yet incredibly intricate and robust natural “design” of the grasses and their flowers.

Finca in Serra de Tramuntana

Presented with a high-quality photograph printed on a 1mx1m canvas, I decided not to repaint this idyllic scene, but strove to enhance the magic of the scene. I applied yellow to the flowers so that they radiate with yet more warmth, different greens to the grass, trees and foliage to enhance the subtle shades and shadows, and blue to the sky to make it yet more brilliant.

Coves del Drac

This painting is inspired by a photo taken during a tour of the Coves del Drac near Manacor. It shows the stalactites and stalagmites in stunning multi-colour, similar to those used to light the original magnificent forms in all their grandeur.

Es Trenc

This painting is inspired by Es Trenc, a 6km beach in the nature reserve of Ses Salinas in the south of Mallorca. The building in the background and the figures are fantastical. The serene calm and majestic beauty of unspoilt stretch of sands protected from the human mass, I hope, preserved in my interpretation.

Galloping horses

This is my latest and most ambitious project to date. It’s not yet complete – nonetheless, I wanted to share the latest status because I think it is interesting to see a picture as it unfolds and finally to compare it with the final piece. It’s an example of the way I work. I start with an idea and sketch an outline in charcoal. Then I start to apply colour, and simply see in which direction it takes me.

In this rendition of galloping horses, I aim to capture the calmness of a sunset at sea by  contrast to the tremendous energy and speed of the two magnificent creatures.

Flowers of Mallorca

These two floral rondels were inspired by my runs along the Sa Cimentera route close to my home in Marratxi. The wild gladiola and the almond blossoms bloom in abundance during the Mallorcan Springtime, creating a magical environment.

I applied a gold background using a gold leaf technique to capture a bit of this magic and to allow them to blend with the Mallorcan stone wall, where they now hang.
